Yogyakarta — Tuesday (7/06/2022), International Program of International Relations (IPIREL) Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has successfully conducted a Visiting Lecture on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Jack Newman, a research associate at the Bennett Institute of Public Policy, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Cambridge.

With the theme of “British Politics After Brexit,” the lecturer began to explain the history of Britain and European integration. He explained that the integration between Britain and European was because of the security concern over the region that possibly trigger the third world war. It’s also worsened by the chance for the US to withdraw from the security alliance. Additionally, economic factors also became a consideration, as the Western countries want to rebuild their economy post-world war.

However, as time goes by, the British somehow find their value mismatched with the Europeans. British tends to lead its own version of European integration, as they hugely controlled coal and steel in international trade at that time. Moreover, Dr. Jack Newman further added that the conflict inside Conservative Party also played a significant part in the decision to leave the European Union, following the emergence of Euro-scepticism in the parliament.

At the end of the discussion, the lecturer explained the consequences of Brexit, which affects four dimensions of British politics; the electorate, the constitution, territorial politics, and political parties. In addition, Dr. Jack Newman concludes that explaining Brexit would depend on a long historical perspective.

Thank you to those who have joined the lecture!
